Julia Halpin

Systemic Psychotherapist

I’m a Systemic Psychotherapist with over 20 years working within Child Mental Health (CAMHS), with a further 13 years prior to this in Adult Mental Health, working as a Mental Health Nurse (RMN).

I am United Kingdom for Psychotherapy (UKCP) registered and a member of the Association for Family Therapy (AFT).

I hold a Systemic Supervision Qualification which enables me to offer supervision to other family therapists.

I offer consultation/therapy to those undertaking the MSc in Family & Systemic Psychotherapy and are required to complete 6 consultation sessions.

I provide couple and family therapy and have experience in working with many different types of families and the variable challenges they face.

I offer online sessions over Zoom both during the daytime and evenings, making every effort to find a mutually convenient time.

  • Family Therapy

We don’t live our lives in isolation, we are part of a wider network or ‘system’ and our interactions with other people are how the system works.

Each family unit is a system, with family members developing different ways of relating to each other.

Families develop patterns of behaviour over time that sometimes become unhelpful, resulting in the family system becoming stuck.

Family Therapy focuses on understanding the relationship between each other rather than focusing on one individual.

The focus of the work is to help family members explore difficult feelings and appreciate each other’s perspective so you can come to an agreed solution.

Families have many strengths and resources. As a Family and Systemic Psychotherapist, I can help you explore and build on theses and help you develop different ways of relating to each other by exploring solutions to problems and creating positive change.

  • Couple Therapy

Couples can face many challenges together, you may have been faced with difficult events, illness and life transitions.

I can offer you a safe space to talk and reflect on your relationship and to think about what changes you would like to make.

I can help you develop better communication and increased understanding of each other, increasing your ability to negotiate change.

  • What to Expect

There are no set number of sessions, therapy can last from between 2 - 4 sessions to the longer term. After each session we will negotiate together if further ones would be helpful.

The gaps between appointments can be weekly, 2 weekly, or can be spread out over longer periods of time, we can negotiate what would suit you best.

Not all family members need attend, you can decide who is best to attend depending on what is discussed. Who attends can vary between sessions.

Each session lasts for 60 minutes.

All sessions are completed online over Zoom.
